Rewriting the OnixOS Build System from Scratch (And Moving to Multiarch)
Developing an independent Linux distribution sounds romantic from the outside. “You are building your own OS, you own the stack, and you have the backing of a passionate community!”
The reality is starkly different: endless build logs, cryptic dependency chains, hours of waiting for ISO packaging, and above all, an intense sense of solitude.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been grinding non-stop on OnixOS. Today, I’m announcing a massive milestone: I have fundamentally rewritten the Onix Build System the core engine behind the distribution completely from the ground up.
This isn’t just a routine release note. It’s a deep dive into why this rewrite was necessary, how we transitioned to a true multi-architecture system, and what it actually takes to solo-refactor a core Linux toolchain.
“No One Is Coming to Save You”
When you decide to execute a radical, architectural overhaul in open source, you quickly learn a harsh lesson: when the going gets tough, you are on your own.
People love discussing ideas. “It would be cool if the build system did X,” or “We should modernize Y.” But when it comes to writing thousands of lines of Python, debugging broken chroot environments at 3 AM, and rebuilding the core packaging pipeline, the room suddenly gets very quiet.
The legacy build codebase had hit a brick wall. It was rigid, single-architecture bound, and accumulated too much technical debt to reliably push OnixOS forward. I had two choices: keep slapping band-Aids on a dying architecture, or tear it down and rebuild it properly.
I chose the latter. I rewrote the entire system by myself.
Key Architectural Overhauls
The goal of this refactor wasn’t just code cleanup. It was to establish a rock-solid foundation for the future of OnixOS. Here is what changed under the hood:
1. Transition to Native Multiarch Support
The old build pipeline was hardcoded around a single target architecture. The new engine introduces first-class multiarch support.
- Target Abstraction: Build routines, toolchain invocation, and rootfs generation are now completely decoupled from the host system’s architecture.
- Cross-Compilation & Native Pipelines: The system cleanly handles architecture-specific flags, cross-toolchains, and target-specific package resolution seamlessly.
2. Modular & Object-Oriented Pipeline Architecture
The collection of loose, fragile shell scripts was completely discarded. The build system now features an extensible, object-oriented pipeline written cleanly in Python. Each stage from fetching sources and chroot sandboxing to squashfs generation and ISO layout creation is an isolated, testable unit.
3. Strict Isolation and Sandboxing
To ensure 100% reproducible builds, environment leaks from the host machine have been eliminated. Chroot and namespace isolation were redesigned to guarantee that target packages only see explicitly declared dependencies.
4. Automated Error Recovery & Clean Teardowns
Previously, a failed build step could leave mounted pseudo-filesystems (/proc, /sys, /dev) dangling on the host. The new execution engine guarantees deterministic cleanup and provides granular breakpoint logging when a stage fails.
Project Activity & Git Reality
If you take a look at our recent commit logs, you’ll see a single story: a solo developer pushing commit after commit, reviewing their own merge requests, and deleting thousands of legacy lines in favor of clean, maintainable code.
